I love going away for a break and to me eating healthy on holiday is just as important as eating healthily beforehand. Why spend all that money going somewhere fantastic to feel bloated and uncomfortable within a few days from going overboard on all the amazing food on offer? Sure treat yourself, you have earned it, but treat your body too by staying healthy, happy and positive!
Keeping your body in a healthy state will also help you recover from jet lag faster, keep your body hydrated and your immune system in top shape to really be able to create amazing holiday memories!
I get questions all the time about traveling and how I keep healthy while away. Sure, it may not be as easy as at home- depending on your destination and nature of travel, but it is completely possible!
Trust me, as a Coeliac – Vegetarian it is do-able and enjoyable!
Before you leave!
Before I even get to the airport…or even close my suitcase, I always pack the following! Gym Kit, Yoga Mat, nutri-bullet! Making sure you have the tools to keep your body, mind and well-being in great condition! Every hotel/motel/apartment/villa/caravan has a plug and space to roll out a mat/train! I have even trained in a lay-by on a driving holiday –so no excuses!
Investigate!
This is big if you are vegan or healthy vegetarian. Most people in places I have been to including Florida, do not really understand what this means ‘you eat fish though right? Chicken? No??-What do you mean you cant eat parmesan?’ hopefully as time progresses, the culinary world will catch up, but for now, investigation is paramount!
Google is a wonderful thing…find the place you are staying, if all-inclusive – chances are you will easily find things to eat (if not, we will get to that later!) if you are more Holiday DIY – look at the restaurants in the area, nowadays they all have menus online and remember you can tweak any dish to serve your needs – the customer comes first!
Destination…Nirvana!
On the plane- eugh nightmare! I can choose vegetarian, vegan or gluten free meals, but never veggie gluten free (Richard Branson-sort it out!) Pret is my winner here- juices, nuts/seeds and protein packed veggie salad-everything you need to take on board and you will even get envious looks from the rest of the passengers, not to mention the crew…never did find my butternut salad!
Arrival!
Once you arrive and get settled, unleash the hunter-gatherer in you! A great way of seeing the sights and taking in the local culture is by getting out there –walking, cycling (remember your basket!-oops), driving –find your local markets, farms, supermarkets to stock up on fresh produce-veggies, nuts, seeds, fruits, water and so on! If you are in a hotel, use their mini-bar to store your healthy snacks!
Every place I travel to, I get to know the area and people so well from researching and exploring, that is what I love doing and what makes my holiday memories extra special. So when your next adventure beckons, remember to plan ahead and make healthy living a fun and rewarding part of your trip!
