After more then a decade in the fitness industry and creating The Evolution Project, Camberley, I still love to smash a workout, give it 150% and the amazing feeling you get afterwards! But sometimes it’s important to pause and take a moment.
Exercise can provide so many positives; increase confidence, energy, well-being, fitness, health. But taking time to check in with yourself and how you feel, keeps your relationship with exercise a happy and healthy one!
Booking time in your diary to train is something nearly all of us do, but allow for how you feel and what’s happening in your life. Appreciate the times you come to train and do amazing things for your body and health and equally appreciate the times you need to take time off to relax or de-stress.
Don’t Over Do It!
While it’s amazing to challenge yourself and feel the burn, overworking your body can cause irritability, poor food choices, fatigue, and increase levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that causes weight gain and weakens the immune system. Getting out of your comfort zone during your workout and feeling amazing afterward is awesome-I certainly love it, but remember rest days are just as important to help you re-focus and re-set!
Ask Yourself!
Before every workout, take a second and ask yourself, ‘What do I need from this workout?’ Sometimes it’s getting a sweat on and smashing it, and other times I may need take my time, or focus on my breath to feel connected with myself, or just enjoy the workout and have fun. Let your inner voice guide your workout for the day.
Do you feel guilt when you miss a session?
If the negative thoughts and guilty feelings start, ask yourself why are you missing this workout? Have you been skipping workouts lately? Are you frustrated that you’re not making yourself a priority? Are you afraid you’re not going to reach your goals?
Even if you do not know the right answer yet, just being mindful of your feelings is the first step. Start to see workouts as time to elevate your well-being, feel strong and healthy both inside and out and knowing that 1 step forward is always one step closer to a goal.
Meet your thoughts with kindness and love. Every night, I write three things I am grateful for in that day. Do this with your body and your fitness and acknowledge every day how far you are coming. Whether you choose to train that day or not, always choose to love yourself and your journey.
