With the summer weather well and truly underway, now is more important then ever to ensure your body is hydrated, especially when training!
There are a lot of ‘sports energy drinks’ on the market set to re-hydrate us in the summer. What these companies do not tell us is the added sugars, sweeteners, food dyes and artificial ingredients that are also in these drinks.
For example, one bottle of standard Lucozade, contains 12grams of processed sugar and sports recovery protein shakes you can get at most supermarkets contain on average 25g of sugar!
For best results, opt for one of these naturally rehydrating, refreshing, electrolyte replacing drinks instead that will taste great and do your body good to get the most from your training this summer!
Organic Coconut Water – contains naturally occurring electrolyte minerals such as potassium; magnesium, sodium, zinc, selenium. These minerals re-hydrate and create balance in the body.
Watermelon Water – contains on average six times the amount of electrolytes of a standard sports drink and includes a huge amount of antioxidants, as well as minerals including, vitamin B6, folate and potassium. If you cant find Watermelon Water in the supermarket, try blending watermelon with lime juice and a few sprigs of mint.
Himalayan Pink Salt – regulates hydration levels and aids absorption faster then just drinking water by itself. Minerals included in Himalayan Pink Salt such as, Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium are all electrolytes necessary for proper functioning of our body and fluid regulation.
Add a pinch of Pink salt to mineral water and a squeeze of lemon, if too bitter, try adding a little honey and blend well.
Maintaining proper hydration is very important. Always be conscious of your water consumption and how much you are drinking and remember to increase it on days you are training and out in the sun.
